TV AM ITV Part Two 29th January, 1992 This is the second of the three part programme put out on UK morning television. It was recorded in Los Angeles. |
Part Two began with Neil rehearsing Beautiful Noise. |
|
|
|
| The interview then continued with Neil speaking about the writing of the song Beautiful Noise. Neil - "Beautiful Noise was actually my daughter's idea. I was with my daughters in New York City staying in a hotel and we were all drawing pictures and outside the hotel was a parade. We were all looking at the parade and all the noise from the parade was coming up to the hotel room and Marjorie, my eldest daughter said "Daddy, what a beautiful noise." And I said "Marjorie, tonight we are going to write a song called Beautiful Noise." |
|
It just struck me as only something a child could think of. That night I wrote Beautiful Noise from beginning to end and the kids sang with me. They sang in the chorus. It was just pure Kismet, pure accident and wonderful too." |

The interviewer said that you could see that Neil's family mean a great deal to him and while he has largely kept them out of the limelight till now you can tell that he is as proud as any dad to have his son Jesse touring with him and of course it keeps the cost down. |
| Jesse - It's just good fun for me really. I don't get paid and I'm just along to have a great time. That's all it is for me. Neil - I told him the band doesn't get paid. We just have fun and it is OK. Interviewer - And you believe that? Jesse - Ehhh, no.

The interviewer asked if Neil had encouraged Jesse to come into the music business.

Neil - Jesse has been playing on stage since he was six, mostly so that I could keep an eye on him. He took to it. He plays drums, he writes music - he is a terrific writer - he's now taking guitar. It's a pleasure for me to have him with me. It's a big kick. It's something that I dreamed about for a long time. I was on the road and I thought some day maybe I will take Jesse with me - so now he's with me - right? Jesse - Right! |

| Neil - And the pay is meaningless to him. He doesn't get paid for the first five years.
The interviewer remarked that he didn't seem to be doing too badly on it!

Neil then spoke about how his early record company, Bang, had made up an imaginary history for him to make him sound more interesting. He went on to add .. Neil - The real truth is that I was born and raised in Brooklyn, I never ran away from home. I got fed every night. Why would I run away? I started taking music lessons when I was sixteen or seventeen. I wrote my first song to my girlfriend when I was seventeen. It's the one I mentioned - Hear Them Bells. I've been writing ever since and I hope to write until there is nothing left of me.

They spoke about how he had considered changing his name. Neil said that he was glad he had never changed it to Eice Chary or Noah Kominsky. He liked Neil Diamond best. Neil - How would it be introducing my kid - "Hi this is Jesse Chary" ? Then Neil called Jesse over in front of the camera again to say what he thought about a change of name. |
|
He gave him the various choices to see which one he preferred. Jesse said that he liked Jesse Kominsky the best of the three. |
